I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of earlyonset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".
We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I
expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell.I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case Iwould only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

Subastado un mechón de pelo de John Lennon por 33600€

Un mechón de cabello de John Lennon se vendió hoy por 24.000 libras (unos 33.600 euros, 48.000 dólares) en una subasta de artículos de los Beatles celebrada en la localidad de Worthing (Inglaterra).

El valor del pelo de Lennon, adjudicado por teléfono a un postor anónimo en la casa de subastas Gorringes, se disparó al alcanzar un precio ocho veces superior al calculado por los subastadores, cifrado en hasta 3.000 libras (4.200 euros, 6.000 dólares).
El mechón pertenecía a Betty Glasow, una antigua peluquera de los legendarios Beatles (Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison y Ringo Starr), que ha coleccionado durante años objetos relacionados con los "cuatro fabulosos" de Liverpool.
El pelo, cuidadosamente guardado en un ejemplar de "A Spaniard in the Works", el libro de poesía que Lennon (1940-1980) publicó en 1965, viene acompañado de una nota manuscrita en la que se lee: "A Betty, mucho amor y pelo. De John Lennon".
La ex peluquera, que ahora tiene más de 70 años, recibió el peculiar regalo al recortar los famosos flequillos que lució la banda en la película "A Hard Day's Night" (1964), dirigida por Richard Lester.
"Betty recortó sus flequillos durante un tiempo y ellos (el célebre cuarteto) se encariñaron bastante con ella", comentó Francesa Collin, portavoz de Gorringes.
"Es asombroso que aún haya tanto interés en los Beatles y la subasta demuestra que John Lennon es todavía un icono", explicó Collin, al subrayar la "autenticidad" del mechón del músico, de cuyo asesinato en Nueva York se cumplieron 27 años este 8 de diciembre.
"Colecciones de este tipo -agregó la portavoz- son raras y el pelo en particular es realmente algo extraordinario para los coleccionistas de los Beatles".
Jubilada recientemente, la señora Glasow descubrió algunos secretos sobre el pelo de algunos componentes de los Beatles, como George Harrison (1943-2001), quien tenía, al parecer, un cuero cabelludo muy seco.
Del guitarrista, precisamente, se ofreció hoy al mejor postor una fotografía dedicada a la ex peluquera firmada por "Caspa Harrison", que se remató en 6.500 libras (unos 9.100 euros, 13.000 dólares).

Led Zeppelin Reunion: The Review

You might think it couldn't possibly live up to expectations, but, it transpires, the opposite is in fact true of Led Zeppelin's first public appearance in 17 years.
They seem buoyed by the deafening roars that greet their every twitch tonight - everyone present in the O2 Arena is willing their performance to the realms of greatness. It's almost impossible to be subjective, to not be sucked in.
It takes Robert Plant three songs before he offers a cursory "good evening". By that time they've alreay blasted through an incendiary 'Good Times Bad Times', a dramatic 'Ramble On' and the stop/start rhythms of 'Black Dog'. He needn't say anything.
Next they launch into 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' and Zep are smiling at each other, only occupying about six square feet of the enormous stage. You wouldn't believe this is a band who haven't played together for so long.
They do 'No Quarter and they're locked in as tight as if it were the 1970s. Only the close ups on the screen at the back give away their advanced years.
Next they launch into a version of 'Dazed And Confused' that seems to last forever - but every last second is enthralling.
Jimmy Page is lit up by lasers and at the song's climax Robert Plant yells out "Jimmy Page on electric guitar!" in a moment that resonates right back to their first gigs in the late '60s.
'Stairway To Heaven' follows. Ridiculous in many ways, it's still a song that everyone present thought was fated to only be performed by dodgy pub covers bands and not again by its creators.
Jimmy has the double headed guitar, bassist John Paul Jones is sat at a keyboard and Plant - contrary to the pre-gig rumours - is singing beautifully.
Playing this well-known classic proves a shrewd move, as it gently reminds everyone present just which giant-sized rock band they're dealing with.
The final half-hour is comprised of songs so omnipresent it's hard to make any sort of tangible judgment.
'Kashmir' finishes the main set sounding incredible before the band take a bow and they're gone.
Rapturous applause follows as you might expect, but its nothing compared to the sheer mania that greets the first encore song 'Whole Lotta Love'. Not many bands have one of those, you see.
The middle section veers into space rock territory any young band would be proud of, and when that riff returns its... well you already know how it goes.
Then Led Zep blast through a second encore of 'Rock And Roll' - paying tribute to their old mentor and the reason that this concert is taking place, Ahmet Ertegun, on the way - and, well again... you know how it goes.
If there were sceptics here tonight - there weren't but just for the sake of argument consider it - Led Zeppelin silenced them and banished any rotten memories of their shambolic Live Aid reunion.
More importantly, though, what they have done here tonight is prove that they can still perform to the level that originally earned them their legendary reputation.
We can only hope this isn't the last we see of them.

Causas de la muerte de Kevin Dubrow
Hace dos semanas ya de su trágica muerte cuando conocemos, en palabras de la policía, las causas de la fatal noticia.
El ya ex-cantante de Quiet Riot, KEVIN DUBROW, murió de sobredosis accidental de cocaína.
Una portavoz de la policía asi lo confirmo ayer mismo tras recibir las conclusiones del analisis realizado en la escena del suceso, y de los resultados de tóxicos.
La noticia la conocimos el 25 de Noviembre, aunque parece ser que el cantante llevaba varios dias fallecido en su hogar antes de ser encontrado por sus allegados. Tenía 52 años.

HOLLYWOOD (April 17, 2007) - Since reuniting in January '07 to perform a benefit concert, GREAT WHITE has moved forward and hit the studio for their first album in 8 years. 2007 marks GREAT WHITE'S 25th Anniversary, so original members Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (lead Guitar), Audie Desbrow (drums), Michael Lardie (Guitar/keyboards) and Sean McNabb (bass) have been in studio the last few months writing and recording. Back To The Rhythm is being mixed, produced, and engineered by band member Michael Lardie while collectively all are adding their sounds to the mix. "The new songs sound fresh to me, very GREAT WHITE, but with an approach of what we sound like in a live performance situation," explains Michael Lardie. "Kendall and I are having fun channeling our Stones roots and playing off each other in the Richards/Woods tradition."
With it being their anniversary year and a new album in tow, GREAT WHITE is once again ready to rock all summer long. The band will hit the road for summer shows Nation wide to support their new album Back To The Rhythm [Shrapnel Records] as well as slam out all their greatest hits the fans know and love.

GREAT WHITE then signed with Portrait Records, an imprint founded by A&R guru John Kalodner that featured fellow hard rock acts such as Ratt. Can't Get There From Here was released in 1999 and is the band's last studio opus thus far.
2007 marks GREAT WHITE'S 25th Anniversary, so original members Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (lead Guitar), Audie Desbrow (drums), Michael Lardie (Guitar/keyboards) and Sean McNabb (bass) have been in studio the last few months writing and recording. Back To The Rhythm is being mixed, produced, and engineered by band member Michael Lardie while collectively all are adding their sounds to the mix. "The new songs sound fresh to me, very GREAT WHITE, but with an approach of what we sound like in a live performance situation," explains Michael Lardie. "Kendall and I are having fun channeling our Stones roots and playing off each other in the Richards/Woods tradition."
With it being their anniversary year and a new album in tow, GREAT WHITE is once again ready to rock all summer long. The band will hit the road for summer shows Nation wide to support their new album Back To The Rhythm [Shrapnel Records] as well as slam out all their greatest hits the fans know and love.
The Southern California blues-rock band first took a bite out of the rock scene in 1984 and since then has achieved worldwide success, encompassing sales of over six million records. They received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and earned a double platinum certification for the album "…Twice Shy". The soulful, blues-based signature sound that turned songs like "Face The Day", "Rock Me" and "Save Your Love" into international hits, can also be found on the new songs which are currently being mixed by the band's keyboard player Michael Lardie.
The late 80's were boom years for the band, marked by non-stop touring with some of the biggest bands of the era and playing also in Europe and Japan. GREAT WHITE recorded two more albums for Capitol - Hooked, which was certified gold and Psycho City. Reunión de EXTREME
Se anuncia y se oficializa otra reunión para el próximo 2008. Extreme, aquella banda que se hizo increíblemente popular por su canción número uno en varios charts del mundo, incluyendo Billboard, More Than Words. El grupo volverá a juntarse el año que viene, no sólo para realizar conciertos alrededor del mundo sino también para grabar un nuevo álbum que ya se encuentra en producción.
El grupo se conformará por los integrantes originales como Nuno Bettencourt (guitarra), Gary Cherone (voz) y Pat Badger (bajista), y el nuevo baterista, Kevin Figueiredo.
extreme.jpgEl disco que grabarán y que produce el mismo Bettencourt, será el primer material inédito en trece años tras su separación en 1996 y dos breves reencuentros en 2004 y 2006 que no fueron más allá de algunos shows. El CD aún sin título verá la luz en la primavera del año siguiente.
Bettencourt habla sobre el nuevo LP y el retorno definitivo de Extreme.
“Tendrá todos los ingredientes de un disco de Extreme. La música siempre es más funk que la mayoría de las bandas de rock y dará nacimiento a un bastardo bipolar del Señor Zeppelin y la Señora Beatles.

Extreme tendrá su primera aparición de regreso en público el 1 de Diciembre en los Boston Music Awards.
Este agónico 2007 fue el año de las reconjunciones de Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Black Sabbath con Ronnie James Dio (Heaven & Hell), e Immortal. 2008 verá a históricos actos como Carcass, At The Gates y Forbidden reformarse. Ahora Extreme se les une, quizá con menos repercusión para algunos, pero si con más potencial para otros.

Su disolución, hace casi treinta años, no logró borrarles del olimpo más absoluto del rock. En medio de una expectación abrumadora, los legendarios Led Zeppelin resucitarán este lunes en el auditorio londinense O2 Arena su extraordinario legado.
Que las viejas glorias del rock sientan nostalgia por los escenarios no es algo novedoso. Hoy en día, el regreso de veteranísimos de los decibelios como los Sex Pistols o The Doors no hace más que confirmar una tendencia que parece ir en aumento.
Pero la reaparición del cantante Robert Plant, el guitarrista Jimmy Page y el bajista John Paul Jones, los tres supervivientes de Led Zeppelin, se ha convertido en una de las citas -por no decir la cita- más anticipadas de la historia de la música.
La excusa, en esta ocasión, la brinda el tributo dedicado al fundador, en 1947, de la discográfica estadounidense Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, un concierto homenaje en el que llenará el vacío que dejó en 1980 la muerte de John Bonham en la batería su hijo Jason Bonham, quien al parecer ha heredado los genes privilegiados de su progenitor.
La incalculable influencia que tuvo el cuarteto británico en grupos posteriores del hard-rock; el misticismo de sus letras y las pinceladas blues y folk de algunos de sus temas auparon por derecho a esta curtida formación a los libros más sagrados de la música, libros salpicados, con frecuencia, por leyendas negras que proyectan una imagen oscura de sus componentes.
El concierto en Londres estaba programado inicialmente para el pasado 26 de noviembre aunque tuvo que posponerse forzosamente ante la fractura que sufrió en un dedo el guitarrista Jimmy Page, felizmente recuperado.
Esta reunión, todo un caramelo para los nostálgicos del heavy rock, coincide, casi, con el lanzamiento el pasado 13 de noviembre de "Mothership. The Very Best Of Led Zeppelin", un CD doble que recopila veinticuatro de los temas más conocidos del grupo, que se formó hace ya treinta y nueve años.
Y no sólo la excepcional reunión de Page, el cantante Robert Plant y el bajista Jones en un escenario convertirá el acontecimiento en especial. La banda estará arropada por una selección de teloneros de lujo, entre los que figurará, con seguridad, el ex bajista de los igualmente míticos Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, o el escocés Paolo Nutini, quienes no han querido perderse el singular homenaje a Ertegun.

25º ANIVERSARIO DE THRILLER: MICHAEL JACKSON

Thriller es el segundo álbum del cantante Michael Jackson como solista, tras su larga etapa como líder de la banda familiar, conocida como Los Jacksons y Jackson Five. Su primer álbum fue Off the Wall de 1979.
Publicado por Epic Records el 1 de diciembre de 1982, contó como el álbum anterior con Quincy Jones como productor y Rod Temperton como uno de los principales compositores. Es el disco más vendido de la historia de la música. Vendió más de 27 millones de copias tan solo en los Estados Unidos y se calcula que en la actualidad lleva vendidas más de 104 millones de copias en todo el mundo según el Libro Guinness de los Records.
Quincy Jones, músico de larguísima experiencia que ya había colaborado con Frank Sinatra, supo pulir el talento de Michael, quien también despuntaba como compositor y letrista pero que (como se demostraría después), podía caer en excesos creativos si trabajaba solo. Jones creó para Michael un sonido excepcional, en cuanto a estilo y técnicamente, fundiendo los ritmos negros con la última tecnología en instrumentos así como efectos de sonido. La canción "Thriller", que en buena medida relanzó las ventas del disco, marcó una época al usar ruidos de puertas chirriantes y un recitado de Vincent Price, actor de culto del cine de terror.
El álbum consiguió también 58 discos de platino, dos de uranio y 8 Premios Grammy, siendo el primero en alcanzar esta marca y hoy día solo igualada por Carlos Santana con Supernatural. Incluye éxitos como Beat It, Billie Jean y Thriller.
El vídeo musical que acompañó al tema "Thriller" es un hito en la historia de los medios. Esta producción de 13 minutos de duración, dirigida por John Landis, es semejante a un corto de cine y produjo sensación por su trama, sus imágenes impactantes y coreografías. Se cuenta que este clip propulsó las ventas del álbum, después del single "Billie Jean", que a pesar de su éxito no suscitaba el éxito comercial esperado por la discográfica.
Algo que he descubierto (y que me dicen que cómo no sabía esto...), el punteo de guitarra de "beat it" es de Van Halen
